Gregory Stephanopoulos, MIT professor of chemical engineering and biotechnology, talks with The Guardian about his research turning exhaust gas from power stations, steel mills and garbage dumps into liquid fuels using engineered microbes. The process "uses bacteria to convert the waste gases into acetic acid - vinegar - then an engineered yeast to produce an oil."
